Hey there, friends. If you’ve been keeping up with the world of streaming services, you’ve probably noticed Apple throwing its hat into the entertainment ring. They’ve been making a ton of noise with some pretty big announcements about upcoming shows. One of the latest and most exciting projects is Lisey’s Story. This series is based on the novel of the same name by the legendary Stephen King. And guess what? Stephen himself is producing it alongside powerhouse creators J.J. Abrams and Julianne Moore, who’s also starring in the series. That’s right—this is not just any adaptation; it’s a dream team collaboration.

Now, let’s dive deeper. The series will feature eight one-hour episodes, and here’s the kicker—each episode will be scripted by none other than Stephen King himself. That’s right, folks, the master of horror is bringing his storytelling prowess directly to the screen. The production team is also on the lookout for high-profile directors to helm the different episodes. If you’re a fan of Stephen’s work, you might recall that he and J.J. Abrams previously teamed up for the Hulu adaptation of 11.22.63, so this is clearly a partnership that works. Get ready for something truly special.

The Plot Thickens: What's 'Lisey’s Story' All About?

According to the publisher, Scribner, the plot of Lisey’s Story revolves around Lisey Debusher Landon, who lost her husband, Scott, two years prior. Their 25-year marriage was filled with profound intimacy, but it also had its fair share of frightening moments. Scott was an award-winning, bestselling novelist, a man of great complexity. Early in their relationship, Lisey learned about Scott’s world of books, blood, and what he called "boools." Later, she came to understand that Scott had a place he visited—a place that both terrified and healed him, a place that could either consume him or inspire his creativity. Now, it’s Lisey’s turn to confront Scott’s demons and journey into the mysterious Boo’ya Moon. What begins as a widow’s attempt to sort through her celebrated husband’s papers turns into a life-threatening journey into the darkness he once inhabited. Stephen King calls this novel perhaps his most personal and powerful work, exploring the wellsprings of creativity, the temptations of madness, and the secret language of love.

Lisey’s Story was partly inspired by a near-death experience Stephen King had in 1999 when he was struck by a minivan on a Maine road. This incident led to a series of thoughts about mortality that deeply influenced the novel. As he shared with BookPage, “Sure, there’s no doubt about that. I had the accident, and then as a result, two years later I had pneumonia because the bottom of my right lung was crumpled and nobody realized that. It got infected and that was very serious; it was actually closer to death than the accident. So I had some of those mortality issues on my mind.”

Stephen also reflected on the often overlooked individuals behind the creative geniuses. He began to think about the spouses of artists who rarely receive the credit they deserve. “Spouses of creative people never get credit, and a lot of times they get the blame,” he says. “There’s that story about Robert Louis Stevenson’s wife urging him to throw the first draft of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde into the fire, which he did, and then he wrote the thing again. What nobody ever suggests is that maybe she was right and that the second version was actually better than the first.”
