Now, here's a story about one of the greatest love stories in Hollywood history—Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz. Even though Lucy ended up marrying twice, there was just one man who truly had her heart, and her dear friend, Tom Watson, knows it well. In an exclusive chat with Closer Weekly, he reveals that Lucy got it right the first time when she tied the knot with Desi.
“I was around her, and I know, I know,” Tom said, reflecting on Lucy’s deep affection for Desi. “They were the best thing for each other and the worst thing for each other. They could push all the wrong buttons, but also all the right ones. At the end of the day, they were better off apart.”

After spending two decades together and welcoming two children, Lucie Arnaz, now 67, and Desi Arnaz Jr., 66, the iconic Hollywood couple decided to part ways in 1960. “For whatever reason, the first marriage didn’t work out,” Tom explained. “[But] she didn’t throw him away. They became good friends because they shared their kids.”

Love After Divorce
Lucy went on to marry her second husband, Gary Morton, in 1961, while Desi found love again with Edith Mack Hirsch in 1963. Even though their romantic relationship had ended, Lucy and Desi stayed connected for the sake of their children.
“That’s a real life lesson right there. A lot of times, when people divorce or break up, they don’t want to see that person ever again, and they fight for years. They forget that they once meant everything to each other,” Tom shared. “I’m not saying it happened the day after the divorce, but after a short cooling-off period, they moved on as friends.”
