Would Princess Diana Have Been the Ultimate Royal Grandma?

Let’s face it, folks, when the news broke about Meghan Markle and Prince Harry welcoming their first child, it was a global celebration. But as we rejoiced, many of us couldn’t help but wonder what life would be like if Princess Diana were still around to witness this joyful moment. The arrival of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s baby boy on May 6, 2019, would have made Diana the proud grandmother of four—yes, FOUR—royal grandchildren.

Now, while fans all over the world would have adored seeing Diana in her role as a grandmother, Prince William once humorously suggested that his late mother might have gone a little overboard with her grandparenting duties. In the 2017 documentary Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy, William joked, “She’d be a nightmare grandmother—an absolute nightmare.” But don’t get me wrong, this isn’t a bad thing. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. “She’d love the children to bits,” William added, “but she’d be an absolute nightmare.”

Prince William hilariously elaborated, "She’d come and go, and she’d probably show up at bath time, causing an amazing scene—bubbles everywhere, bathwater all over the place—and then she’d just leave." Can you picture that? It sounds like bath time would have been nothing short of a circus act, but in the best way possible.

Although William and Harry had to bid farewell to their beloved mother in a heart-wrenching funeral after her tragic car accident in August 1997, William revealed that he is “constantly talking about Granny Diana” with his wife, Kate Middleton, and their children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis. This keeps her memory alive in their hearts.

William shared, “We’ve got more photos up around the house now of her, and we talk about her a bit and stuff. It’s hard, because obviously Catherine didn’t know her, so she cannot really provide that level of detail.” William continued, “So, I do regularly when putting George or Charlotte to bed, talk about her and just try and remind them that there are two grandmothers—there were two grandmothers—in their lives,” referring to Diana and his father Prince Charles’s second wife, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall. “It’s important that they know who she was and that she existed.”

More than two decades have passed since the world lost the Princess of Wales, but William revealed that he still feels deeply connected to his mother. “They always live with you, people you lose like that,” he said. “My mother lives with me every day.”

As we look to the future, it’s clear that Diana will continue to live through the stories that Harry and Meghan will tell their children, just as William and Kate do with their own kids.
