Alfre Woodard's Journey: A Conversation About Life, Career, And Family

Alfre Woodard Reveals Why She Puts Family Before Fame (Exclusive)

Let’s dive into the world of Alfre Woodard, the legendary actress whose career has spanned over four decades. Ask her what it was like to star alongside Denzel Washington in the iconic '80s hospital drama St. Elsewhere, and you might expect tales of steamy love scenes or her two Emmy nominations for the show. But instead, she shares something far more meaningful: a lifelong friendship. In an exclusive interview with Closer Weekly, Alfre, now 66, reveals the deep bond she formed with Denzel and his family. “I am godmom to Denzel and Pauletta Washington’s twins, Olivia and Malcolm, and I’m Auntie Alfre to their kids John David and Katia,” she says. For Alfre, family has always been a cornerstone of her life, both on-screen and off.

Despite her illustrious career — she's currently starring in Netflix's charming rom-com road movie Juanita — Alfre remains deeply committed to her family. Her 35-year marriage to writer Roderick M. Spencer, 61, and their adopted children, Mavis, 27, and Duncan, 25, are her top priorities. “Until my kids were born, marriage was my main commitment,” she explains. “I trust my husband more than I’ve trusted any other human being. It feels like love, but it’s also deeply spiritual, like a homecoming. I put nothing before my family.” Keep scrolling to read our exclusive Q&A with Alfre!

Producing ‘Juanita’: A Labor of Love

When it comes to creating meaningful projects, Alfre doesn’t just rely on her talent — she brings her entire family into the mix. For her new film, Juanita, she and her husband, Roderick, worked together as executive producers. It all started when author Sheila Williams handed her a book, Dancing on the Edge of the Roof, saying she had Alfre in mind for the lead role. Alfre knew exactly who to turn to. “I took it to my husband because he has a way with words that I can only dream of,” she shares. “I told him, ‘I don’t want an anniversary, birthday, or Christmas present. All I want is for you to write this screenplay.’”

Some might wonder why Alfre trusted her husband to adapt a woman’s novel. But for her, the decision was obvious. “He’s more of a feminist than I am!” she laughs. “After being with me for 38 years, he’s become deeply involved in my family, surrounded by strong, dynamic women who adore him. I knew he could bring the nuance and depth that this story required.”
