Even though Annette Bening and Warren Beatty’s kids have all grown up and are living their own lives, these legendary parents are still there for them every step of the way. Now that Stephen, Benjamin, Isabel, and Ella are off chasing their dreams, Annette can’t help but reminisce about the days when her little ones were just toddlers.

“I really miss them, quite frankly,” Annette revealed exclusively to Closer Weekly at the Toronto International Film Festival premiere of Hope Gap in 2019. “I get that they’re adults now, and they want to live their own lives — I love that, and I’m so proud of them. I try to get them to text me as often as possible, but let’s be honest, sometimes they’re not great about it.”

While Stephen, Isabel, Ella, and Benjamin might not always text back right away, that doesn’t mean they don’t adore their mom. They’ve learned so much about the entertainment industry just by watching their parents in action.

“I feel incredibly fortunate to be able to pursue the work that I love, and I want my children to see that,” Annette explained, opening up about what she hopes to have instilled in them. “I want them to find something they’re passionate about, something they can dedicate themselves to as a way of growing and learning throughout their lives. It’s all about finding your purpose and sticking to it.”

Hard work isn’t the only lesson Annette and Warren’s kids have picked up from their famous parents. They’ve also been taught the importance of family and the value of respecting the people you care about.

“There’s love for your parents, your family, your spouse, your partner, your friends, but the bond you have with your children is unique,” Annette shared. “It’s such a profound and powerful connection — it shapes how I view the world. There’s nothing else quite like it.”

And it certainly helps that Warren and Annette are still as much in love as ever. “We just enjoy spending time together and talking,” Annette gushed. “And let me tell you, we talk a lot about politics. It’s a big part of our lives.”

During a 2022 interview with People, Annette admitted that having a family was something she always dreamed of. “It’s been a lifelong goal for me. Ever since I was a kid, I wanted to be the one taking care of others. I started babysitting when I was 12 or 13, and it just felt natural. There’s nothing else that compares to the joy of raising a family.”

Stephen, born in January 1992, is Warren and Annette’s transgender son. His journey began at the young age of 14, and Annette has nothing but admiration for how gracefully he’s handled the challenges that come with transitioning.

“I’m so incredibly proud of Stephen,” Annette told AARP the magazine. “He’s taken on something incredibly difficult with such style and intelligence. He’s an articulate and thoughtful person, and I couldn’t be prouder of him.”

In 2024, during an interview on The View, Annette opened up about her initial worries when Stephen first came out. “At first, I felt a strong need to protect his privacy,” the American Beauty star confessed. “He’s the son of two well-known people, so I felt it was important for him to decide when and how much he wanted to share with the world.”

She went on to say, “As time has passed, especially given the unfortunate political climate, it’s become clear that trans people are being used as pawns in a dangerous game. Fear and ignorance are being stoked against them in the most alarming ways. It’s so unfair, and it breaks my heart.”
