Meghan Markle's Baby Shower Drama: What Really Happened?

Queen Elizabeth’s Former Spokesman Calls Meghan Markle’s NYC Baby

When the world learned that Meghan Markle secretly jetted off to New York City for her baby shower, royal fans everywhere lost their minds. The Duchess of Sussex made a quick trip back to her native United States, and everyone wanted to know every last detail about the lavish bash. But guess what? Not everyone was as excited about it. Dickie Arbiter, Queen Elizabeth’s former press spokesman, had some pretty candid thoughts to share.

In a recent chat with Us Weekly, Dickie, author of On Duty With The Queen, spilled the tea. “Baby showers are really an American tradition,” he said. “We don’t do that kind of thing over here in the U.K. Honestly, the whole thing seemed a bit extravagant, especially when it came to the costs and how she traveled.”

The Big Apple Bash

Meghan, 37 at the time, landed in New York City on February 18, kicking off a two-day celebration that reportedly cost a staggering $200,000. The festivities took place in a stunning penthouse suite at The Mark Hotel, where Meghan was surrounded by some of her closest pals, including Serena Williams, Amal Clooney, and Toronto-based stylist Jessica Mulroney. The group seemed to have a blast, enjoying every moment as they celebrated the soon-to-be mom.

One name was notably absent from the guest list: Kate Middleton. As cameras captured many of Meghan’s friends arriving at the extravagant event, royal watchers began to wonder why Kate wasn’t there. Rumors swirled that their alleged feud might be the reason, but the truth is much simpler. Kate, also 37, simply wanted Meghan to enjoy her time with her friends. After all, it’s not every day you get to celebrate with the people you don’t see as often.

According to Good Housekeeping, the Duchess of Cambridge likely skipped the trip because Meghan’s party was intended for friends who don’t see her regularly and can’t easily visit her in London. Since the duchesses see each other frequently, Kate decided to celebrate Meghan at a different time.

Will There Be a Second Shower?

Not long after her New York City celebration, whispers began circulating that Meghan — who is expecting her first child with Prince Harry this spring — might attend a second baby shower in the U.K. This time, the festivities would include her husband and the rest of the royal family. “That’s a question they’ll need to answer,” Dickie told the outlet. “Meghan’s American, and she does things the American way.” Guess we’ll just have to wait and see if Baby Sussex gets another party!
