Her First Post: A Step Back in Time
In her inaugural post, the Queen wrote about an intriguing piece of history. "Today, as I visit the Science Museum, I discovered a fascinating letter from the Royal Archives written in 1843 to my great-great-grandfather, Prince Albert," she began. The letter was penned by Charles Babbage, a pioneer often credited as the world's first computer inventor. Babbage introduced the concept of the 'Difference Engine,' a prototype Prince Albert viewed in 1843. In the letter, Babbage also detailed his 'Analytical Engine,' which inspired Ada Lovelace, the daughter of Lord Byron, to create some of the first computer programs.
Connecting the Past with the Present
Queen Elizabeth didn't stop there. She went on to reflect on the present and the future. "Today, I had the honor of learning about children's initiatives in computer coding, and it feels incredibly appropriate to publish this Instagram post at the Science Museum," she added. The Museum has long celebrated innovation, technology, and inspired countless young minds to become the next generation of inventors. She concluded her post with her signature, "Elizabeth R."
View this post on InstagramToday, as I visit the Science Museum I was interested to discover a letter from the Royal Archives, written in 1843 to my great-great-grandfather Prince Albert. Charles Babbage, credited as the world’s first computer pioneer, designed the “Difference Engine”, of which Prince Albert had the opportunity to see a prototype in July 1843. In the letter, Babbage told Queen Victoria and Prince Albert about his invention the “Analytical Engine” upon which the first computer programmes were created by Ada Lovelace, a daughter of Lord Byron. Today, I had the pleasure of learning about children’s computer coding initiatives and it seems fitting to me that I publish this Instagram post, at the Science Museum which has long championed technology, innovation and inspired the next generation of inventors.
