Stevie Nicks On Love, Life, And Following Her Muse

Decades ago, Stevie Nicks made a bold decision that has shaped her life ever since: she promised herself that nothing—not marriage, not kids—would ever come between her and her passion for music. For the legendary Fleetwood Mac star, being single at 70 isn’t just okay—it’s a choice she embraces fully. In a candid conversation with Rolling Stone, Stevie opened up about why love and family have never been top priorities for her, and why she’s happier following her creative muse than settling down.

“I haven’t been in a relationship for a long time because I’ve chosen to dedicate my life to music and let it take me wherever it needs to go,” Stevie shared. “When I was younger—in my 20s, 30s, and even 40s—I always had a boyfriend. But now, at 70, I’ve decided to live freely and pursue what makes me happy. And guess what? I deserve it.” You go, girl!

Stevie isn’t shy about expressing her thoughts on modern dating culture. “To be honest, the way people date these days doesn’t appeal to me at all,” she admitted. “I don’t like how the Internet has changed the landscape of human connection. It’s like romance itself has been pinned to a wall, suffocated by technology.” She believes that finding genuine love in today’s fast-paced, digital world is tougher than ever before.

  • Not only does she feel that technology creates barriers in personal relationships, but it also affects her work as a songwriter. “As a songwriter, I thrive on writing about love, but it’s harder when romance feels so distant,” Stevie explained. To fuel her creativity, she often turns to her close friends for inspiration. “Whenever someone calls me up and says, ‘I met this incredible person and fell head over heels,’ I’m all ears. I want to hear every detail!”

    The Decline of Romantic Conversations

Unfortunately, Stevie says those kinds of heartwarming stories don’t happen as frequently anymore. “Back in the day, people would share their love stories with such enthusiasm, but now those conversations are few and far between,” she lamented. According to Stevie, this shift is largely due to the rise of technology and social media. “Girls, don’t take it personally if you’re struggling to find meaningful connections. It’s not you—it’s the Internet,” she joked. “Real romance requires effort, and in this high-tech world, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to nurture those feelings.”

A Brief Marriage That Taught Her Lessons

Despite her current views on love and relationships, Stevie did experience marriage once in her life. Following the tragic death of her best friend, Robin Anderson, who lost her battle with leukemia, Stevie married Robin’s widower, Kim Anderson, in 1983. The union wasn’t born out of romantic love but rather a desire to help Kim raise their young son, Matthew. “I wanted to be there for that baby,” Stevie recalled. “I convinced Kim, and just three months after Robin passed, we got married.”

Unfortunately, the marriage didn’t last. After only three months, Stevie and Kim called it quits. “It was a disaster from the start. It was the wrong thing to do, trying to take on someone else’s child and husband. It was insane,” she reflected. Life, as Stevie learned, is all about growing from experiences, even the tough ones.
