This year, we're celebrating a major milestone: the 25th anniversary of the film that introduced Toni Collette to American audiences, Muriel’s Wedding. As we look back on this beloved Australian dramedy, Toni herself is still in awe of how much time has passed. However, she’s quick to express her immense gratitude for a project that transformed her life "on every level." It's a story of growth, opportunity, and lasting impact, and Toni couldn’t be more thankful.

Closer Weekly sat down with the 46-year-old actress at a special screening hosted by the Australian International Screen Forum in NYC on Thursday, March 21. During the event, Toni, who recently captivated audiences in Hereditary, was honored with an award for her work in Muriel’s Wedding. Written and directed by the legendary Paul John “P.J.” Hogan, the film remains a cultural touchstone. As Toni accepted the award, she couldn’t help but get emotional, reflecting on the journey that began with this groundbreaking role.

Though Toni is perhaps best known for her Oscar-nominated performance in 1999’s The Sixth Sense, she revealed during the Muriel’s Wedding panel that she frequently encounters fans quoting memorable lines from both films. Whether it’s “You’re terrible, Muriel” or “I see dead people” — neither of which she actually says in the movies — Toni finds these moments deeply touching. For her, it’s a beautiful reminder of the connection her work has forged with audiences over the years.

It’s a role that has stood the test of time, cementing its place as a classic in the world of cinema.

Q&A with Toni Collette: A Look Back at 25 Years of 'Muriel's Wedding'

Can You Believe It's Been 25 Years?

Believe it or not, Toni herself can hardly believe it. "No, actually, I cannot!" she exclaimed. "It’s very bizarre!" For her, the passage of time only amplifies the significance of the film and the journey it set her on.

How Did 'Muriel’s Wedding' Change Your Life?

"On every level," Toni replied. "I really did have the time of my life making it. We all did. And it didn’t just change my life; it changed everyone’s lives who were involved in it, you know?" She went on to explain that while she had always loved acting, this film propelled her career in ways she could never have imagined. "I would never, ever have dreamt up the career that I’ve had. Like, who gets that kind of longevity? I have to pinch myself. I can’t believe I’m even here, you know?"

When Did You Realize the Cultural Impact of the Movie?

Toni shared a poignant memory of walking through the streets of New York when two gay men approached her, visibly excited. "It was eye-opening," she said. "Here I was on the other side of the planet, and someone knew who I was because of this little movie from Sydney. That’s when I realized just how far-reaching the film’s impact truly was."

When's the Last Time You Watched the Movie?

Toni admitted she couldn’t recall the last time she sat down to watch Muriel’s Wedding. "It’s been probably a couple of decades ago. Really, it’s that long," she said. As she prepares for the upcoming screening, she admitted to feeling a bit nervous. "It’s a weird thing to say because it’s not like it’s a new movie and we aren’t sure how people are going to take it. But it is an important film for me and for those involved. I’ll probably be [very emotional] at the end!"

What About a Sequel or Revival?

While Toni isn’t sure how a sequel or revival would unfold, she’s quick to praise the musical adaptation of Muriel’s Wedding. "The musical is incredible," she gushed. "I saw it in Sydney the year before last. I have nothing to gain from saying this, but it is absolutely amazing. Really, it is."
