Cate Blanchett Trusts Her Kids for Career Guidance

Here’s something you don’t hear every day: Academy Award-winning actress Cate Blanchett leans on her four kids for career advice. In a candid interview with Who Magazine, the talented actress opened up about how her children—Dashiell Upton, 16, Roman Upton, 14, Ignatius Upton, 10, and her toddler daughter, Edith Upton—play a pivotal role in her decision-making process when it comes to choosing her next big project.

Cate shared, “I seek their opinions all the time. They’re my built-in focus group.” She went on to explain, “Especially with a film like The House with a Clock in Its Walls, you want to know, ‘Is this something you’d want to go and see?’ Their input gives me a fresh perspective and helps me understand what resonates with younger audiences.”

Cate, who is 49 years old, revealed that her eldest son, Dashiell, often gets the final say when it comes to her career choices. “When I was sent the script for The House with a Clock in Its Walls, I asked him, ‘They’re going to get Eli Roth to direct this. Isn’t he the guy that does all the horror?’ And Dashiell replied, ‘Oh my god. You put Eli Roth on an Amblin film? That’s combustible,’” Cate recounted with a laugh.

Even though Dashiell had some initial doubts, he encouraged his mom to take on the role of Florence Zimmerman in the film. With his blessing, Cate decided to play a witch who teams up with a warlock, portrayed by Jack Black, to bring peace to a magical world. It’s clear that her children’s opinions carry a lot of weight in her decision-making process.

Her Kids Love Supporting Mom’s Career

Cate’s children are incredibly supportive of her career. In a previous interview on The Jonathan Ross Show, she mentioned how much joy she gets from earning "brownie points" from her kids. It’s a relationship built on mutual respect and admiration.

“They don’t always watch my films, but they do give me honest feedback. A few years ago, my son gave me some great career advice. He said, ‘Mum, when are you going to make a blockbuster?’ I replied, ‘I was in Lord of the Rings!’ And he said, ‘Yeah, but you were only on screen for about 30 seconds. So it didn’t really count.’ I had no brownie points with my children,” Cate joked. It’s clear that her kids keep her grounded and inspired.
