When Danny DeVito Stepped Up to Save His Best Friend

It’s not every day you hear a story about one Hollywood legend saving another, but that’s exactly what happened when Danny DeVito came to the rescue of his longtime friend and co-star, Michael Douglas. On a recent episode of The Talk, Danny recounted a wild incident from their time filming the 1984 adventure classic, Romancing the Stone. Set against the rugged backdrop of Mexico, this tale of friendship, bravery, and a little bit of snake-related chaos is one for the ages.

Danny, who’s now 73, explained how the two found themselves in the middle of an unexpected encounter with some slithering critters. “We were in Mexico, in this really rugged kind of place, and there was this guy who had a truck with a cage on it,” he recalled. “Inside the pickup truck, in the bed of the truck, were snakes. All the kids were around, and I’m scared of snakes, myself. I don’t want to go near a snake, but Michael, he’s being the hot shot, Mikey D!”

The Snake That Turned Into a Big Problem

As the scene unfolded, a local man had a snake draped casually on his arm, drawing the attention of curious onlookers. Michael, always the adventurous type, decided to grab the snake. “And the guy’s got a snake on his arm and all the kids are coming around,” Danny continued, his voice dripping with humor. “And Michael grabs the snake so I say, ‘Michael, don’t touch the snake! That’s a snake, man! That snake could bite you, man!’” The audience on The Talk erupted in laughter, recognizing the absurdity of the situation.

But unfortunately, the snake wasn’t in the mood for games. It struck quickly, sinking its fangs into Michael’s hand. Danny, realizing the gravity of the situation, sprang into action. “I always heard the best thing to do is suck the poison out, right away, so I did,” he revealed with a grin. “I grabbed his hand and I’m spitting all over the place, and I say, ‘Boy, it’s a good thing this didn’t bite you on the balls, man, because you would’ve been a dead man!’”
