Embracing the Joys of Growing Older
Emma Thompson, the celebrated Oscar-winning actress, is not just accepting her age but celebrating it with open arms. Although her 60th birthday isn’t until next April 15, Emma is already reveling in the wisdom that comes with age. "I look my age, and I don’t mind that — being old is heaven," she said at a recent fundraising event in London. Emma, who's currently wowing audiences alongside Stanley Tucci in the legal drama The Children Act, shared her thoughts with Vulture. "I want to enjoy every moment and use the wisdom I’ve gathered over the years," she added.
A Life Lesson to Live By
When it comes to life lessons, Emma’s advice is as practical as it gets. "Always remember to bring a jacket!" she joked exclusively to Closer Weekly, bringing a touch of humor to her wisdom. But when she gets serious, Emma’s insight is profound. "Just remember you’re going to learn a lot more from failing than you are from succeeding, and evaluate it accordingly," she advised during a TimesTalk Q&A in NYC. This is the kind of wisdom that comes from years of experience and reflection.

Healing from Heartbreak and Moving Forward
Emma’s journey through love hasn’t always been smooth sailing. She spoke candidly at a London event about the heartbreak she endured after her marriage to Ken Branagh ended. "I had my heart very badly broken by Ken," she admitted. But now, after 15 years of marriage to Greg Wise, she reflects on those experiences with a sense of peace. "You can’t hold on to anything like that. I just think… pfft!" she said, illustrating how far she’s come emotionally.
Love Through the Ups and Downs
Over the years, Emma has developed a deep understanding of love and its complexities. She recognizes that relationships inevitably have their highs and lows. When couples claim to be perpetually happy together, Emma is skeptical. "People change and life changes and you can’t have the same relationship as when you first met," she told Vulture. "When people say, 'Our relationship has been bliss,' I just go, 'I don’t believe you.'" Her insights reflect a realistic view of love that acknowledges its challenges.

Redefining Romance
Emma’s early years were heavily influenced by fairy tales, which painted a romanticized picture of love as the ultimate goal in life. As she grew older, she became disillusioned by these "lies and fairy tales" marketed to young women. It wasn’t until she met Greg Wise that she began to redefine romance in a way that resonated with her true experiences. "Now I’d say that what happens after happy-ever-after is where love begins. Falling in love is an exalted state, but it is a temporary state," she explained, offering a more grounded perspective on love.
