She’s the woman who’s brought chilling characters to life on both big and small screens, but Kathy Bates never truly understood fear until her ovarian cancer diagnosis in 2003. The moment the news hit her, she remembers feeling an overwhelming wave of dread. "I was shaking for hours that day," she confessed. "I completely shut down. I stopped working, I avoided social events, I withdrew from everything. It was like my whole world had been turned upside down."
Fast forward to today, and the 70-year-old Academy Award-winning actress not only beat ovarian cancer with chemotherapy but also faced another health scare in 2012 when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. This time, knowing her family's extensive history with cancer, Kathy opted for a double mastectomy to prevent any recurrence. Looking back, Kathy admits she wished she hadn’t been so private about her battle with ovarian cancer. "If I had to go through it again, I would’ve been more open," she shared. "I’ve attended cancer support events since then, and seeing women with bald heads, standing tall and proud, has been incredibly moving. Their courage has inspired me to be more vocal about my journey."
