Acclaimed actress Nicole Kidman recently opened up in an insightful essay for New York Magazine’s Women and Power issue. The blonde powerhouse, who’s currently married to country star Keith Urban, got candid about her past marriage to Tom Cruise and how it shielded her from certain dangers within the entertainment industry.

In a recent appearance on Today, Nicole, now 51, clarified her earlier remarks about Tom's protective role in her life. "Because I got married at 23, my social life was pretty limited," she explained on Monday, Oct. 22. "I wasn’t partying or going out much. I was mostly at home." She continued, "I had my first child at 25, and by that time, I was already immersed in family life. My world was either work or home, and that shaped my perspective on life significantly."

A Marriage That Provided Safety

Nicole made waves earlier this month with her bold statements about her marriage to Tom Cruise. She revealed, "I’ve always hesitated to discuss my relationship with Tom because I’m now married to the man who is my true love, and it feels almost disrespectful." The Big Little Lies star elaborated, "I got married very young, but it wasn’t for power—it was for protection. Being married to such an influential man kept me safe from sexual harassment in Hollywood." The Oscar-winning actress added, "I married out of love, but marrying someone so powerful created a cocoon around me. By the time I emerged from that marriage at 32 or 33, I felt like I had to grow up all over again."

Addressing the #MeToo Movement

Nicole acknowledged that she’s experienced her fair share of #MeToo moments but chose not to share them publicly. "Do these experiences influence my work? Absolutely," she said. "I pour my emotions and experiences into my performances. I want to tap into my well of life experiences—whether it's about sexual harassment, loss, or death—and use them authentically. But it’s crucial that these stories are handled by the right people, so they’re not exploited again."
