Love Story icon Ali MacGraw has always been proud of her role as a mother. The Golden Globe-winning actress welcomed her only child, son Josh Evans, with her then-husband, legendary film producer Robert Evans, back in 1971. Even though life took unexpected turns, Ali and Josh have always shared a deep bond. Scroll down to get to know more about Josh’s journey and how he carved his own path in Hollywood.
Introducing Josh Evans: The Son of Ali MacGraw and Robert Evans
Ali MacGraw and Robert Evans tied the knot in 1969, a union that brought them immense joy when Josh entered their lives in 1971. However, life in the fast lane of Hollywood meant their marriage was short-lived, ending in 1972. Shortly after, Ali found love again with Hollywood legend Steve McQueen, whom she met during the filming of The Getaway. Together, they built a home in Malibu, California, blending their families with Josh and Steve’s son, Chad McQueen.
During her marriage to Steve, Ali chose to step away from the spotlight to focus on raising her son. She admitted, “He was the biggest movie star in the world and he didn’t want me to work. So I essentially quit making movies and took care of my child.” Her decision reflects her dedication to family and the importance she placed on being a mother.

Josh Evans' Journey in the Entertainment Industry
After Ali and Steve parted ways in 1978, she returned to acting, inspiring Josh to eventually follow in her footsteps. However, Josh’s path into Hollywood wasn’t always clear-cut. He once revealed in a March 2016 interview with Crypticrock.com, “I think the first job I ever wanted to do was not in the film business. I was not one of these kids who dreamed of being an actor; it just happened. I was definitely going to be in film, but I never imagined it would lead me here. One day, you wake up and realize you’ve come so far.”
Josh’s acting career took off with his debut in the 1989 film Dream a Little Dream. He continued to build his resume with roles in Born on the Fourth of July, The Doors, and The Price of Air. But over time, he discovered his true passion lies behind the camera. He explained, “I’m definitely more comfortable on the side of the camera that doesn’t show myself. If an interesting opportunity comes my way, I’m open to it. But there are plenty of people out there who are more qualified and passionate about acting than I am. Directing and telling my own stories is something I’d do for free—it’s my true calling.”
A Family Legacy: Josh Evans as a Father
In 2003, Josh married his first wife, Charis Michelsen, but their union ended in divorce in 2012. That same year, he found love again with Roxy Saint, and the couple welcomed a son, Jackson. This joyous occasion made Ali and Robert proud grandparents.
Throughout his life, Josh has maintained a close relationship with both his parents. Ali once described her son in a June 1991 interview with The Washington Post, saying, “He’s so wonderful.” Josh also honored his father’s legacy by attending Robert’s Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony in 2012. Robert passed away in 2019 at the age of 89, but not before sharing a sweet photo of his grandson Jackson on Twitter.
