When Bill was in his early 60s, he was already a seasoned veteran of the entertainment industry. He’d been in over a hundred films, done radio, and performed on the vaudeville stage with his wife Louise, the only woman he ever married. They were a hit act, introducing songs like ‘Carolina in the Morning’ and ‘My Melancholy Baby.’ But life took a turn, and they split years before Bill became Fred Mertz. By the time I Love Lucy came around, Bill was still a handsome guy, but his career was starting to slow down. He was getting a reputation for being an alcoholic, and roles were drying up. That’s just how show business works—younger actors get all the parts.”
Geoffrey continues, “When Bill heard about I Love Lucy, the pilot had already been made, but there were no Fred and Ethel characters yet. Bill, being the sharp guy he was, knew there was an older couple in the original radio show, My Favorite Husband, which I Love Lucy was based on. So, he saw an opportunity and seized it.
