Why Did Callie Leave Grey Sloan Memorial?
Sara Ramirez, the actress who portrayed Callie, made the decision to leave the series a few seasons ago. Naturally, Shonda Rhimes crafted an emotional storyline to bid farewell to her character. After her tumultuous breakup with Arizona Robbins (played by Jessica Capshaw), Callie embarked on a new relationship with Penny Blake, also known as “the doctor who killed Derek” to Amelia Shepherd. The twist? Penny received a prestigious job offer in New York, and Callie, realizing she was deeply in love, decided to follow her across the country. But here’s the kicker—she also wanted to take their daughter, Sofia, with her.

The Battle for Sofia
Arizona, understandably, was not on board with this plan. Cue the epic custody battle between the two mothers. You see, Callie was Sofia’s biological mother, while Arizona had adopted her. In the end, Arizona was awarded full custody, leaving Callie heartbroken and devastated. However, Arizona eventually softened and agreed to a compromise, allowing Callie to take Sofia to New York for a short period. With that chapter closed, Callie left the show, leaving fans with a void in their hearts.

What Did Sara Ramirez Have to Say?
“I’m deeply grateful to have spent the last 10 years with my family at Grey’s Anatomy and ABC, but for now, I’m taking some much-needed time off,” Sara Ramirez shared in a statement following her departure. “Shonda’s been an incredible boss to work for, and we will definitely continue our conversations! I send my love to Ellen, the rest of the cast and crew, and I look forward to always being a part of the Shondaland family!”
Does this mean there’s a chance we’ll see Callie again in the future? “I have zero idea. I have no idea. I’ve never been in the loop with any of that,” Jessica Capshaw told Variety. “But hey, anything is possible, right?” Let’s keep our fingers crossed!
