From Reluctance to Commitment: Bridget Moynahan's Journey to Joining 'Blue Bloods'
It's no secret that Bridget Moynahan and Donnie Wahlberg have become one of the most beloved sibling duos on TV. But here's the thing—Bridget wasn’t exactly jumping at the opportunity to join the cast of "Blue Bloods" when it all started. It took a little persuasion from her on-screen brother, Donnie Wahlberg, to convince her to sign on. And let me tell you, we’re all pretty glad she did!
"I did talk Bridget into doing this show sort of," Donnie revealed during the special episode Blue Bloods: Celebrating a Family Legacy, which aired on November 29. The New Kids on the Block singer, who's played Danny Reagan for all 14 seasons, shared how he personally reached out to Bridget to make the deal happen. Now, years later, they’ve created a bond both on and off-screen that fans have grown to love.
How Donnie Convinced Bridget to Take the Role
When Bridget first heard about the opportunity to join "Blue Bloods," she wasn’t immediately sold on the idea. In fact, she had already passed on the role once before. But Donnie, always the persistent one, wasn’t about to let her slip away. “Yeah, Donnie and I had done a pilot together probably the previous year,” Bridget explained. “It did not get picked up, so when he took this, he called me immediately to see if I would take it. And I had already kind of passed on it, but of course when Donnie calls and says, ‘Let’s do this together,’ I reconsidered.”

That simple phone call from Donnie changed everything. It wasn’t just about work for Bridget—it was about family. And that’s exactly what "Blue Bloods" became for her over the years.
A Bond That Goes Beyond the Screen
For Donnie, having Bridget by his side on set has been nothing short of life-changing. He opened up about their incredible relationship during the special episode, holding back tears as he talked about what Bridget means to him. "She's my sister, like on screen and off," he said. "I don’t want to get emotional... but I love Bridget a lot. We’re not here without her."
Donnie’s words reflect the deep connection the two have formed over the years. Their chemistry is undeniable, and it’s one of the reasons fans have tuned in week after week. It’s clear that their bond extends far beyond the world of television.
Farewell to a Beloved Series
Like many fans, both Bridget and Donnie were surprised to hear that "Blue Bloods" would be ending after its 14th season. In a September 12 interview with People, Bridget expressed her disappointment. "I think we’re all a little disappointed," she admitted. "We’ve had such a good time. We all want to be there. It’s a real loss."
While Donnie initially told TV Guide Magazine on October 30 that he wasn’t "sad" about the show ending, he later confessed that the reality of it was starting to sink in. As the final episodes began airing, he shared his feelings on X, writing, "Can’t wait til next episode... Though, I am hoping they don’t come along too fast. This is getting more and more sad the closer we get. But I’m here – #UntilThereAreNoFridaysLeft #BlueBloods."

Bridget spoke candidly about how much the show has meant to her over the years. "This was our daily lives for 14 years," she said. "And we’ve all experienced together major life moments together, whether it’s births, deaths, marriages, divorces, illnesses—we’ve had it all together." It’s clear that the cast has formed a family-like connection that goes beyond the set.

What’s Next for the Reagan Family?
As the final two episodes of "Blue Bloods" approach, fans are eagerly anticipating what’s in store for the Reagan family. Bridget gave us a little tease about the potential drama between Erin and her ex-husband, Jack Boyle. "The rest of the family really is not into him," she hinted. "This season he does come in a few times, and I think that people are going to be really excited about the last episode in regards to that storyline."
When asked about the finale, Bridget told TV Insider on November 15, "I think that fans are going to be really left satisfied, but then also wanting more." Sounds like we’re in for an unforgettable conclusion to a beloved series!
