Long before the world was overwhelmed by celebrities with single names, there was Charo. A beloved figure on TV during the '60s and '70s, this Spain-born comedian, actress, and flamenco guitarist captured hearts with her charm, wit, and self-deprecating humor. “I decided, ‘Alright, I have an accent, and it’s never going to change,’” Charo, now 71, shared with Closer. “So, I’m going to have some fun with it. Every time I open my mouth, it gets me into trouble, but I’m transforming my accent into something positive.”

Her fearless attitude has propelled Charo far—not just in her professional life but also in overcoming personal challenges. In 2019, she tragically lost her husband and manager, Kjell Rasten, to suicide after more than 40 years of marriage. They had one grown son together. “It’s astonishing how life can change overnight and take you to the darkest places,” Charo reflects. “But there’s always a way to survive. You just have to be strong.”

A Life Shaped by Adversity

Fleeing Spain Under Franco’s Rule

You’ve faced tough times before, including fleeing Spain during Francisco Franco’s dictatorship. What do you remember about that period?

  • “I’m no different from anyone else—everyone has their own story. In my early years, we were privileged, but suddenly everything changed. You don’t know where your father is, and you see your mother crying quietly when she thinks no one’s watching. We were evicted from the estate that had been ours for centuries. I didn’t see my father again until I was 18.”

Lessons from a Father Who Advocated for Freedom

    What was your father like?

“My father was passionate about freedom, education, and equality. Before leaving Spain, he worked tirelessly to ensure my sister and I understood the value of education. Knowledge is irreplaceable. He also made us promise never to get involved in politics. If he hadn’t, I’d probably be a congresswoman today!”

    Really? Why?

“Honestly, every time I watch the news, I find myself shouting at the screen. Someone needs to tell the truth. I’d be causing chaos at the White House. I would! The only thing you can’t do is become president unless you were born in America, but I’d love to be a congresswoman.”

  • “Back when we were prosperous, my grandmother struck a deal with the Gypsies—Gitanos in Spanish—to live on our land. Every sunset, they’d build a bonfire, gather with their kids, and sing all night. My sister and I became close friends with those children, and I became obsessed with the sound of the guitar. At age 7, they let me try playing—it wasn’t great—but when you’re young, your mind absorbs everything like a sponge.”

    Breaking Barriers with Andrés Segovia

Later, you studied under the legendary classical guitarist Andrés Segovia. Tell us about that experience.

“Andrés Segovia was extraordinary—a person you could never forget. At my audition, they asked me, ‘What are you doing here? You’re just a little girl, and this isn’t for girls!’ I was furious, but I auditioned anyway. As they say in America, I got a callback.”

    The Origins of "Cuchi-Cuchi"

Where did your famous catchphrase “cuchi-cuchi” originate?

“My grandma adored animals. She had a dog—a mix between a Saint Bernard and a pit bull—named Cuchillo, which means knife. He was aggressive with everyone except our family. He was my little angel. He had an injury, so he couldn’t wiggle side to side. Instead, he wiggled forward when he was happy. I used to imitate him, and that’s how the movement began. I called him ‘Cuchi’ because ‘Cuchillo’ was too long for a 3-year-old.”

    Surviving Loss and Finding Strength

We’re deeply sorry about the loss of your husband. Can you tell us about that experience?

“What happened to me, I pray no one else has to endure it. He was taking the steroid prednisone for a skin condition. If you read the fine print, it mentions potential suicidal thoughts. That’s what occurred—without warning, argument, or issue. The dog led me to where I found him.”

Do you have advice for others dealing with grief?

“My advice is to remember that life is worth living, no matter how low you feel. There are people around you who depend on you. If someone needs to take prednisone, they should—it saves countless lives—but be cautious about withdrawal and suicidal thoughts.”

    Finding Light in Darkness

What helped you through this difficult time?

“I kept reminding myself that my family needs me, and I love them unconditionally. Social media and fan support also played a huge role in my recovery. Gradually, the kind comments reminded me of what I’d accomplished before. They brought me back, I swear.”

    Looking Ahead

    Love, Legacy, and Future Plans

Do you think you’ll date again?

“I’ll never look at men again—and believe me, I love men! My partner passed away, and if he was a good man, I’ll see him in heaven. I won’t find someone to replace the love I shared for many years. That was real love. Now, I dedicate my life to my son and family.”

What are you most proud of?

“As a Capricorn, I’m never satisfied with what I’ve achieved. My career today is fantastic, but I’m always thinking about tomorrow.
