'House of Night' Book Series Is Coming to TV: Take an Inside Look

Hey there, friends. Let’s get real for a moment: vampires aren’t going anywhere. They might come and go like the tides, rising and falling in popularity over the decades, but they’ve never truly disappeared. In fact, this subgenre of horror has always been a crowd-pleaser, whether we’re talking about Dracula’s countless incarnations, Barnabas Collins haunting the shadows of Dark Shadows, the brooding charm of Angel and Spike from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the sparkly allure of Edward Cullen in The Twilight Saga, or, most recently, Zoey Redbird, the fledgling vampire at the heart of the House of Night book series. This beloved series is now being adapted into a TV show by the same team behind Shadowhunters, so let’s dive in and take a closer look.

House of Night: A Vampire Saga Like No Other

House of Night is a series of 12 novels penned by the dynamic mother-and-daughter duo of P.C. Cast and Kristin Cast. These books introduce a fascinating twist to the vampire mythos: a small percentage of teenagers, when their hormones kick into overdrive during puberty, awaken something known as Junk—or non-coded—DNA. This awakening sets them on a path to becoming vampires, or as they’re referred to in the series, "vampyres." It’s a unique take on the classic vampire lore, blending the supernatural with the struggles of adolescence in a way that feels fresh and relatable.

Life at the House of Night

When these teens discover their hidden potential, they’re sent to a "House of Night" boarding school. There, they learn how to navigate their new existence as vampires and survive the intense transformation. But it’s not all sunshine and roses—about one in 10 teens can’t handle the change and, tragically, don’t make it. For those who do, the rewards are extraordinary: they become stronger than most humans, boast heightened senses, lightning-fast reflexes, and can live for over five centuries. It’s a high-stakes journey, but the payoff is undeniably tempting.

“OK, just bear with me on this,” P.C. Cast laughs during an exclusive interview with Closer Weekly. “I’ve always thought that young adults are a lot like vampires. They believe they’re immortal, right? And you do feel invincible when you’re a teenager. Plus, they all want to be special, whether it’s excelling on the football field, shining in drama class, or making a splash with their fashion choices at school. Teenagers identify closely with beings that are ‘extra’ in different ways, including their emotions. When you’re dealing with vampires, you’re also diving into intense passions—blood passion, blood lust, and all that jazz. And, of course, hormones are running wild in teenagers, so they’re grappling with their own passions too. It’s no wonder there’s such a strong connection between young adults and paranormal beings like vampires.”
