Alex Trebek's Heartfelt Reflections On 'Wuthering Heights' And His Love Story

Let me tell you a story about a man who, despite being one of the busiest people on the planet, took a moment to celebrate his love for cinema and the woman who has been his rock for almost 30 years. That’s right, I’m talking about Alex Trebek, the beloved host of Jeopardy!, and his unforgettable trip to Yorkshire with his wife, Jean. Even with everything else going on in his life, Alex made time to introduce one of his favorite films, Wuthering Heights, at the TCM Classic Film Festival.

On Saturday, April 13, Alex, who was 78 at the time, stepped up to the plate at the Wuthering Heights panel. Now, you might think he’d be hesitant to dive into a classic film discussion, given his recent pancreatic cancer diagnosis and the whirlwind of challenges he was facing. But here's the thing: when they told him which film they wanted him to introduce, his perspective shifted entirely. “I was reluctant at first because, let’s be honest, I’ve got a lot on my plate,” he admitted. “But then they mentioned Wuthering Heights, and I said, ‘Sign me up!’ It’s one of my top three favorite films of all time.”

For those who may not know, Wuthering Heights is a timeless tale adapted from Emily Brontë’s novel, and it’s not just a movie for Alex—it’s a passion project. He shared how he and Jean embarked on a journey to the heart of the Brontë world. “When Jean and I got engaged, I made sure she knew just how much I adored this story,” he said. “So, we decided to visit Haworth, the quaint village in West Yorkshire where the Brontë family lived. By the time we arrived, their parsonage had been transformed into a museum and gift shop—a little slice of literary heaven.”

Alex went on to describe their adventure as if it were a scene straight out of the book. “Jean and I did what any self-respecting fans of Wuthering Heights would do—we walked the moors,” he laughed. “I even picked some heather along the way. We hiked to an old abandoned home called Top Withens, which has a brass plaque identifying it as the possible inspiration for Emily Brontë’s vision of life on the moors. It’s not exactly like the house in the book, but it certainly stirred the imagination.”

“As we made our way back to town, a rainstorm hit us out of nowhere. The rain was coming down sideways, soaking us to the bone,” Alex continued. “But hey, that’s part of the charm, right? We found shelter in an old abandoned sheep shed and, while waiting for the storm to pass, we carved our names into the stone. It was like stepping into the shoes of Heathcliff and Cathy. We had a blast, I tell you! (crowd erupts in laughter) No, no, don’t go down that road.”
