During the March 4 episode of Today, Al, a self-proclaimed foodie, demonstrated how to make New York Times writer Sam Sifton's no-recipe sloppy Joes using a keto-friendly bread recipe from food blogger Maria Emmerich of Maria Mind Body Healthy. While whipping up this delicious meal live on air, Al shared some insights into his recent lifestyle changes.

During the show, cohost Hoda Kotb couldn’t help but ask, “Al, how much weight have you lost on the keto diet?” With a proud smile, Al responded, “I’ve lost about 40 pounds.” Now, his fellow cohost Savannah Guthrie, who isn’t exactly a fan of the low-carb, high-fat diet, was left absolutely speechless by his impressive results.

  • But it’s not just about the number on the scale. Al went on to share how much better he feels overall. “My cholesterol — I just had them checked a couple of weeks ago. Everything’s good,” he said, beaming with pride. It’s clear that this new lifestyle isn’t just about looking good; it's about feeling great too.

    Family Motivation: Why Al Sticks to Keto

    One of the driving forces behind Al's weight loss is his family, which includes his wife Deborah Roberts and their three children, Courtney, Leila, and Nicholas. Al once made a promise to his late father that he would lose weight, and despite some tough times after his mother's passing, he's stayed true to that promise. It's heartwarming to see how much his loved ones inspire him to lead a healthier life.

    Of course, Al isn't the only celebrity giving the keto diet a shot. Others like Halle Berry, Sherri Shepherd, and even Paula Deen have tried it too. But as with any diet, opinions vary. Biggest Loser's Jillian Michaels has questioned its effectiveness, but Al remains open-minded. “What works for you, works for you,” he said. “There’s science on both sides that says it’s not a great idea and science that says it is a great idea.”
