Queen Elizabeth: The Funny, Modern Monarch Who Keeps Us Laughing

Watch CBS Evening News: Queen Elizabeth II's sense of humor - Full show

Let’s talk about Queen Elizabeth II for a moment—she’s 92 years old, has been on the throne for 65 years, and yet she’s anything but dull. In fact, she’s got a sense of humor that’ll make you do a double-take. "One of the things that surprised me most is she’s got a fantastic sense of humor," Nick Kent, the executive producer of the new documentary, Queen of the World, told Closer Weekly in their latest issue, which is out now. And let me tell you, this is not your average royal we're discussing here.

Think about it—she’s had decades to perfect her craft, and maybe that’s why she knows exactly how to disarm people. "I think that’s why she goes to great lengths to put people at ease," Kent added. It’s like she’s saying, "Hey, I may be the Queen, but I’m just a regular person too." And people who meet her often walk away saying things like, "Oh, she’s just like my grandma!" That’s how relatable she makes herself, even as the monarch of an entire nation.

Prince Harry and the Queen: A Bond Over Laughter

Even Prince Harry, her grandson, can’t help but joke about her. In the documentary, Harry teases, “You guys have spent way more time in Buckingham Palace than I ever have — and you’ve only been here two weeks.” Then he adds, “Have you bumped into the Queen yet? If you suddenly bump into her in the corridor, don’t panic. I know you will. We all do!” It’s clear that Harry has a soft spot for his grandma, and maybe that’s why they share such a close bond.

Modernizing the Monarchy: The Queen’s Media-Savvy Moves

But it’s not just her sense of humor that sets her apart. Queen Elizabeth is also a trailblazer when it comes to modernizing the monarchy. “The Queen is very media-savvy in quite surprising ways, and it goes back to her coronation, which was televised,” Kent explained. “It was her idea to do so, as it was her way of saying hers was a new age. And she did it against the advice of the establishment, including Prime Minister Winston Churchill.” That’s right, folks—she went against the grain and made history by televising her coronation, setting the tone for a new era.

Her Unlikely Bonds with the Younger Generation

And if you think she’s just sticking to tradition, think again. Her rebellious spirit has made her close with the younger generation, including Prince Harry, Meghan Markle, Prince William, and Kate Middleton. “The Queen has unlikely friendships with people decades younger,” Kent noted. “There’s a real bond between William, Kate, Harry, Meghan, and the Queen. They’re all very close.” Can you imagine what a day with Elizabeth would be like? Probably filled with laughter, wisdom, and maybe even a few surprises!
