Donna Reed: The Unlikely Hollywood Journey

Donna Reed's Daughter Mary Anne Reveals New Sides of the Actress

Let me tell you a story about Donna Reed, a woman who defied the odds in the glamorous yet unpredictable world of Golden Age Hollywood. How do you explain someone like Donna, who starred in the timeless classic It’s a Wonderful Life and won an Academy Award for her role as a prostitute in From Here to Eternity, yet still struggled to find meaningful roles afterward? It’s a fascinating tale of resilience, creativity, and reinvention.

Donna once reflected on her career in a 1958 interview with the New York Daily News, saying, “The Academy Award brought me more opportunities and better paychecks, but I never again received a part as powerful or impactful as the one that won me the award.” That’s the thing about Hollywood—it can be both generous and fickle.

Donna Reed: A Woman on a Mission

Now, here’s the thing about Donna Reed—she wasn’t someone who just sat back and accepted whatever Hollywood threw her way. No, she was determined to carve out her own path. Alongside her then-husband and producer, Tony Owen, she set out to create a role that truly suited her. This journey eventually led to the iconic TV series, The Donna Reed Show, which is now streaming on MeTV.

  • Donna shared her thoughts with The Journal News, saying, “Finding the right concept took two long years. We were bombarded with ideas from every screenwriter in town. I could have played a race track tout, or even an elevator operator in the Empire State Building with a new story on every floor. Someone even suggested a show about a female bullfighter. But none of those ideas felt right for me.”

    The Turning Point

It was a suggestion from a Screen Gems executive that finally sparked the idea: Why not have Donna play herself? And just like that, the concept for The Donna Reed Show came to life. In the series, Donna portrayed Donna Stone, the loving wife of pediatrician Dr. Alex Stone and mother to their children, Mary (played by Shelley Fabares) and Jeff (played by Paul Petersen).

At first glance, it might not seem groundbreaking, but trust me, it was. Not only did the show survive its first season against the juggernaut that was The Milton Berle Show on NBC, but it also thrived. Donna was optimistic about the show’s appeal, saying in 1958, “I believe there are plenty of people in this country who will tune in to a well-crafted series about family life, no matter what else is on the air. After all, we have a storyline that resonates with a wide audience. We depict the life of a doctor—a pediatrician, no less—whose life is dedicated to children. And let’s not forget the fantastic kids we have playing our children: Shelley Fabares, the talented niece of Nanette Fabray, and Paul Petersen, a former Walt Disney Mouseketeer. Of course, I’m the wife. In many TV sitcoms, the husband is often portrayed as a bumbling but lovable character, while the wife is the epitome of wisdom. In our show, we break that mold. The wife doesn’t always have the final say.”

    A Legacy of Acceptance

A year later, Donna added, “We knew it would take time to build an audience. We were like a new family in the neighborhood. We had to be known and embraced. And that’s exactly what happened. People came to know and love us, especially Donna herself.”
