Growing Up in Glamour and Ambition

Back in Budapest, their mother, Jolie Gabor, had grand plans for her daughters. “She dreamed of being an actress herself, but she lacked the looks and the talent,” Staggs revealed. Instead, she channeled her ambitions into her daughters, who were tutored in poise and grace from a young age. Zsa Zsa, like her sisters, entered the Miss Hungary beauty pageant at just 15 years old. Though she didn’t win, Zsa Zsa would go on to claim victory throughout her life, often insisting she had taken the crown despite the official results.

A Test of Survival During World War II

When Hitler invaded Hungary in 1944, Zsa Zsa and Eva were living abroad. The Gabor family had converted from Judaism to Catholicism in 1928, but that didn’t protect them from persecution. Magda, the eldest sister, and their parents were arrested. “Magda was deeply involved in the anti-Nazi underground movement,” Staggs explained. “Thankfully, she had a powerful ally in the Portuguese ambassador, who used his influence to secure their release.”
